Securing remote work: controlling connected devices and respecting IT policies

1. The technological fundamentals for securing remote work

Remote work has become the norm for many companies, but that shift comes with considerable security challenges (TinyMDM). Putting the right security tools in place is the first line of defence against cyber threats. VPNs (virtual private networks) remain indispensable for protecting data during remote connections (ACS Info). These solutions encrypt communications and hide the IP address, creating a secure tunnel between the employee's device and the company network.

They generate and store complex, unique passwords for every application, which considerably reduces the risk tied to compromised accounts. Adopting these tools has to go hand in hand with two-factor authentication, to strengthen access security further.

2. Managing connected devices and BYOD policies

The rise of BYOD (bring your own device) calls for a robust mobile device management strategy (TinyMDM). MDM (mobile device management) solutions give companies the ability to secure and manage the devices their employees use remotely. These platforms deploy applications, configure security policies and apply security updates centrally.

That approach ensures only approved, secure applications are used to reach corporate data. 3. Establishing clear IT policies and continuous training

Cybersecurity threats evolve fast, not least with the emergence of deepfake-enhanced phishing and ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) (Randstad). Faced with those challenges, establishing clear security policies becomes imperative. Those policies must include the mandatory use of secure tools and a restriction on connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi networks (ACS Info).

Continuous employee training is an essential investment, because the best technology can do nothing against unsafe practices (ACS Info). Awareness programmes should cover spotting phishing emails, the importance of locking devices, and good backup practice. The CNESST also recommends a structured prevention approach, to identify, correct and control the risks tied to remote work (CNESST).
